In a 72-hour span starting on Dec. 24, Colorado State Patrol said it had responded to seven crashes that left nine people dead.

“That’s nine brothers, sisters, mothers, fathers — nine human beings that aren’t here anymore," said CSP Chief Matthew Packard. "This is an epidemic that has to stop right now."

He said each of those crashes was caused by what he called “selfish driving,” which includes impairment, inattentiveness and driving carelessly.

He said he also learned on Thursday that exactly 600 people had died on Colorado roadways in 2018.

“That’s simply not acceptable,” he said.

The crashes occurred all over the state at all times with varying ages, he said.

CSP released the below video on Thursday asking drivers to use extra caution on the roads.
