COLORADO SPRINGS, Colo. – The El Paso County Coroner’s Office says the shooting that left two people dead Wednesday morning was likely a murder-suicide.

The coroner’s office identified the two people as 56-year-old Karen Canfield and 64-year-old Lenwood Shaal – both of Colorado Springs.

The coroner said Canfield died from multiple gunshot wounds and said her death is being treated as a homicide. Shaal, however, was determined to have died from a single gunshot. The coroner said his death has been ruled a suicide.

Police were called to conduct a welfare check at the home in the 1500 block of Bates drive at 10:41 a.m. Wednesday.

Colorado Springs police says this is the city’s 17th homicide of the year – up from 14 in the same time period last year.

The police department is asking anyone with knowledge of the incident to call them at 719-444-7000 or to call CrimeStoppers anonymously at 719-634-STOP.
