The personal-finance website WalletHub ranks Colorado's education system as 23 overall in the country.

It based the rankingon several factors including student-teacher ratio, dropout rates and average SAT and ACT scores.

The ranking also pointed to Colorado's spending on its school systems, which ranked 24 in the nation. Spending frequently correlates with ranking on the list.

Colorado's school quality ranking was 18 but it dropped to rank 49 for safety.

The safety ranking was based on bullying reports, disciplinary rates and  percentage of public school students in grades 9 to 12 who reported being threatened or injured with a weapon on school property.

John King Jr., the U.S. Secretary of Education, was in Colorado at the time of the release. He said he was touting improvements in early childhood education in the state.
