GRAND JUNCTION, Colo. (AP) — Officials in west-central Colorado say a family's young pit bull dogs were found decapitated on the railroad tracks, miles from their house.
Christin Ormond says the dogs jumped their fence Monday night and were found dead late Wednesday afternoon. One dog also appeared to have burns while the other appeared to have puncture wounds.
The Mesa County sheriffs' office says the case has been inactivated because there are no suspects and no leads.
Sheriff's spokeswoman Megan Terlecky says there is no evidence the dogs were intentionally killed or tied down to the tracks, but there is a strong possibility of animal abuse.
Ormond says she is working with Union Pacific railroad officials to review footage from the company's trains in an effort to learn more about what happened.
