The Colorado Buffaloes are ranked 10th in the latest College Football Playoff rankings released Tuesday evening.

It's the highest rankings the Buffaloes have earned under the current college football playoff ranking which began in 2014.

It's the first time Colorado has cracked the top 10 in any major poll since reaching #7 in the 2002 Associate Press preseason poll, according to CU Associate Athletic Director David Plati.

The Buffaloes, 8-2 overall and 6-1 in Pac 12 conference play, were ranked 15th when this year's rankings debuted two weeks ago. CU climbed to 12th last week.

The top four teams play in the College Football Playoff semifinals on New Year's Eve. The National Championship game is Jan. 9 in Tampa, Fl.

The rankings are determined by the College Football Playoff Committee. It has 12 members, made up of current athletic directors, former coaches and former Secretary of State Condoleezza Rice.

Colorado hosts Pac 12 North leading 22nd ranked Washington State (8-2, 7-0) on Saturday at Folsom Field in Boulder. The Buffaloes final home game is against 12th ranked Utah (8-2, 5-2) on Nov. 26.

The Buffaloes are currently in first place in the Pac 12 South division. The winner of the South will play the winner of the Pac 12 North in the Pac 12 Championship game on Dec. 2 at Levi's Stadium in Santa Clara, Calif., the site of the Denver Broncos Super Bowl 50 championship.
