Colorado AG invites Sessions, staff to see cannabis industry up close

DENVER -- Colorado Attorney General Cynthia Coffman wants to give Washington politicians a lesson in pot. She has invited US Attorney General Jeff Sessions and his staff to visit Colorado.

Coffman thinks it's important for them to see firsthand how Colorado is handling recreational marijuana. She says they did seem open to the idea. 

Sessions and White House Press Secretary Sean Spicer have made clear they're not big fans of legal weed. Sessions believes violence surrounds sales and use of the drug and wants to see additional enforcement. But what that looks like, Coffman says, is still up in the air. 

Despite being a Republican, Coffman said she will defend the state’s pot laws, which were voted into the state constitution. 

"My understanding is that they are at the beginning of looking at this issue, not at a decision-making point, that they will take the time to talk to people who are in law enforcement and in the marijuana industry and who are advocates to get a fuller picture," said Coffman.

Coffman doesn't have a timeline for when a visit could happen. She says her office does plan to send more information about our pot industry to Sessions' staff.
