LONGMONT, Colo. -- Code enforcement took action after the department received a tip about people living in RVs on a residential lot and dumping their waste on the ground. According to Shannon Stadler, the Code Enforcement Manager, the man living in a nearby home was charging them rent.
"I’ve worked here for the city for 22 years and we’ve pretty much been dealing with this property for 22 years off and on all through the different people who have lived here," said Stadler.
The front yard and adjacent properties located at 108 Rothrock Place look more like a junkyard. During a visit of the property Thursday, Stadler pointed out scrap metal and other items collected over the years, like old machinery.
The city issued numerous code violations in January, giving the man time to clean up. When April rolled around and the property looked the same, the city posted an abatement order.
Clean up crews arrived on Tuesday and started removing all the items left scattered on the lawn. Several cars have already been towed and crews are trying to figure out how to remove other large pieces.
"We’ve written the property up over the years, issued summons, taken them to court; they’ve cleaned up a little bit then it would re-offend, then we would write it up again, so this time we’re just cleaning it up," said Stadler.
She expects the clean up efforts will continue into next week so it's too soon to say what the final cost will be. The man living in the home will receive a bill and failure to pay will result in a lien on the property.
Denver7 attempted to contact the owner but another woman at the home said he wasn't available.
