BOULDER, Colo. — The idea began floating around people's minds in Boulder about three years ago — a gondola public transportation system.

The use of gondolas as a form of public transportation over Boulder's skyline would boast exceptional views of the Flatirons, but would impact the look of the city.

Asa Willett said she's excited about the idea of the gondolas.

"I think it would definitely be something extra, but I think anything that could replace the need for cars while still efficiently getting people, especially those who may have issues with mobility, on bikes or by foot — I think it is always a great option," she said.

The City of Boulder said one of the areas being considered in their analysis is a connection between CU Boulder and downtown. However, they say it is still very early in their exploration process and no decisions have been made.

Julia Rubinsky said she believes new forms of transportation could be a positive addition but is worried about the impact to the city’s view.

"I think it could mess up the city, the look," she said. "I am for minimalist — having less is better — so having all these things flying around and then us here, oh my God."

Other cities like Portland, Oregon and Hong Kong already have similar gondola rides.

Whether the same will happen in Boulder is still unknown.
