GOLDEN, Colo. — Certain activities, including swimming and floating on inner tubes, are now prohibited from Clear Creek as snowmelt increases the dangers along the river.

As of Monday at noon, waterway activities on Clear Creek have been restricted due to the dangerous nature of the river in the wake of massive snowmelt. Authorities have already rescued several people from the river

Golden Police Chief Bill Kilpatrick and Jefferson County Sheriff Jeff Shrader made the announcement Monday morning. They said there are safety concerns surrounding swift-moving water and floating debris.

The temporary restrictions apply only to the portions of Clear Creek in unincorporated Jefferson County and Golden.

Clear Creek is a type IV water area and dangers such as cold water temperatures, blasted rock, potential strainers and other safety concerns exist. Water flows have measured 1200 cubic feet per second recently and are expected to rise as more snowpack melts.

The water height is also increasing.

The following activities are now temporarily prohibited:
· Single-chambered air-inflated devices, like belly boats, inner tubes, single-chambered rafts
· Swimming

Kayaks, whitewater canoes, professionally guided rafts, river boards and stand up paddle boards are allowed, but users must use extreme caution. Anybody using these devices must use a Type I, Type III, or Type V Coast Guard-approved paddling life jacket and a water-use designed helmet.

Violators may be issued a summons for a class 2 petty offense, which may result in a $100 fine. Authorities will strictly enforce these restrictions, which will stay in place until water levels decrease.
