CDOT: Westbound I-70 reopens in mountains after multiple crashes

DENVER – Westbound I-70 reopened just before 6 p.m. after being closed for hours at several points in the mountains following crashes.

CDOT shut down the westbound lanes of the interstate just before 3:30 p.m. Tuesday after a crash involving at least several passenger vehicles and at least four semi-trucks near the Eisenhower Tunnel.

CDOT also closed the westbound lanes of the interstate at Georgetown shortly afterward as a temporary safety precaution.

And shortly after 4 p.m., CDOT closed the westbound lanes at Copper Mountain after several vehicles slid off the road.

The roads in the area were snowy at the time, and visibility was poor. The crash came hours after several other crashes snarled traffic in the mountains earlier Tuesday.

The Georgetown closure was lifted shortly after 5 p.m., and the closure at Copper Mountain was lifted just before 6 p.m. Traction and chain laws remain in place.
