Land owned by oil company can't have new school

Posted

Anadarko Petroleum can very well hold up construction of a state-of-the-art Boulder Valley elementary school if an agreement over land rights isn’t reached between the oil and gas giant and the district.

Since the Boulder Valley School District bond issue was passed in 2014, the district has been putting together plans to build a new school to serve the Flatiron Meadows neighborhood near Highway 287 and Isabelle Road in Erie.

"It's a really nice piece of property to build a school on, a lot of work has gone into citing the school on the property, so it's neighbor friendly and family friendly," said Boulder Valley Schools Superintendent Bruce Messinger.

The district tells Denver7, it’s working on a land swap agreement with Anadarko, so Anadarko can continue their work in the county, and the district won’t have to delay construction.

People who moved into the Flatiron Meadows neighborhood are concerned their school isn’t going to be done in time.

The district is hoping to break ground on the school in March, to stay on schedule for an August 2017 opening.

We’ll update you when or if an agreement is reached.
