NORTHGLENN, Colo. — The theft of a well-known piece of public art, a sculpture of a bear and a tree, has residents in Northglenn bear-y upset and the police searching for the people responsible for the grizzly crime.
The bronze sculpture entitled Bee My Honey depicts a bear reaching up to a beehive hanging from a tree. The pieces are between two and six feet tall and weigh several hundred pounds, according to the city. They were last seen on Friday and reported missing on Monday.
“It’s shocking that someone would take something that we actually put here for everyone," said Michael Stricker, Northglenn’s cultural program’s supervisor.
The sculpture was bolted and glued to a concrete pad along the Grange Hall Creek Trail along Washington Street. It’s valued at $21,000.
“We’re hoping someone may have seen someone removing it and mistaken it for maintenance being done,” added Stricker.
Northglenn police are now looking for who’s responsible for the heist. Their post has garnered hundreds of shares and comments online, with the hashtag #WhereIsTheBear.
A reward is now being offered through Crime Stoppers for information. You could be eligible for a reward of up to $2,000. Anyone with information is asked to call Detective Burkhalter at (303)450-8856 or dburkhalter@northglenn.org.
“I hope it ends up some place where we can get the sculpture back so we can put it back for everyone to enjoy it,” Stricker said.
