A Boulder County sheriff's commander accidentally shot himself in the thigh during routine practice at a law-enforcement firing range.
Sheriff's division Chief Tommy Sloan says the commander, who has not been named, fired a ball round from a .45-caliber handgun as he was unholstering it Thursday morning. Sheriff's deputies provided first aid.
The Boulder Daily Camera reports the commander didn't immediately realize he had shot himself and continued target practice. Moments later, he notified the firing range's officer that he had accidentally shot himself.
The shooting happened at the Longmont Police Department and Boulder County Sheriff's Office Firing Range and Training Facility.
Longmont police will investigate the shooting and the sheriff's office will do a follow-up review.
