DENVER – Getting a great deal on a high-definition TV was apparently not the only priority for Black Friday shoppers this year. Gun sales in Colorado broke a record on the day traditionally known for leftover turkey and door buster sales.
The Colorado Bureau of Investigations released Wednesday numbers showing 4,329 background checks were performed the Friday after Thanksgiving. The checks marked the highest number of requests for firearms transfers received in one day in CBI InstaCheck history. Approximately 4,035 background checks were processed on Black Friday 2015.
National guns sales reached an all-time high as well, with the FBI reporting 185,713 transactions going through the National Instant Criminal Background Check System on Friday.
The CBI brought in extra staff and expanded hours to handle the record background check requests. They analyze eight different databases as part of the background check process for firearms transfers to ensure an individual can legally possess a firearm.
