GUNNISON COUNTY, Colo. — A backcountry snowboarder triggered and became caught in an avalanche on Snodgrass Mountain, north of Crested Butte, on Tuesday.

According to the Colorado Avalanche Information Center's preliminary report, two people skinned up the southern side of Snodgrass Mountain on Tuesday. They descended along the north side, near an area called First Bowl.

When they reached 10,000 feet, around 2:15 p.m., the snowboarder was caught in a slab avalanche. It carried him into a tree, injuring his leg.

The two people were able to call 911 for help.

CAIC said they were assisted out of the field by organized rescuers.
