DENVER – The Denver Medical Examiner's Office identified the victim in a deadly shooting near the 16th Street Mall Wednesday afternoon.

Nathanel Simpson, 30, of Wheat Ridge, was shot and killed after an argument between two groups of people on Champa Street near the mall. A second man was also shot. His condition is not known.

Police detained two people after they attempted to flee the area on an RTD bus. A man and woman were seen handcuffed at the scene. Their identities have not been released.

Investigators are still trying to figure out what led up to the fight.

"We have to determine exactly what led up to this to better understand why it happened, why these individuals are down here," said Doug Schepman, a spokesperson for the Denver Police Department.

Champa was closed from 15th Street to 19th Street while police investigated the scene. The mall remained open. Homeland Security officers assisted Denver Police, as the shooting occurred near the federal courthouse.
