AURORA, Colo. — A teenager who shot a man multiple times during an attempted robbery of an Xbox in Aurora in 2018 was sentenced to prison on Monday.
Brigham Yahir Mendez, 16, was sentenced to 30 years in prison Monday. He was found guilty of killing Jacob Michael Clymer, 32.
Clymer and his wife had arranged to sell an Xbox gaming system for $250 with a buyer over Facebook, according to the 17th Judicial District Attorney's Office. They decided to meet at Billings Street and E. Montview Boulevard around 11 a.m. on Halloween 2018. As the couple pulled up to the spot, they saw two males — later identified as Mendez, who was 15 at the time, and a friend — approach the car.
Mendez and the friend said they only had $245 — five dollars short. Clymer and his wife said they wanted the full price that they had previously agreed upon, according to the district attorney's office.
Mendez and his friend left briefly and when they returned, Mendez pulled a gun and demanded the Xbox. He then shot Clymer repeatedly — in the chest, head and abdomen — and fled on foot, according to the district attorney's office. The friend also left the scene.

Mendez was arrested on Nov. 1, the day after the murder.
He was initially charged with first-degree murder after deliberation, first-degree felony murder, one count of attempted aggravated robbery and one count of menacing.
He was prosecuted as an adult.
On Oct. 25, 2019, he pleaded guilty to second-degree murder.
In court, Senior Deputy District Attorney Tariq Sheikh said Mendez said he had planned to rob the couple because he needed money. Sheikh emphasized that the crime was premeditated. He also read a letter from Clymer’s wife, where she expressed the pain her family had endured.
Clymer’s mother previously told Denver7 that her son wanted to sell the Xbox to make a little extra money for the family’s upcoming move to Texas.
