AURORA, Colo. -- Aurora police were sent out to 13th Avenue and Chester Street for an unusual call to pick up a caiman, Sunday evening.

The resident had found the reptile and put it in a plastic container, according to police. Officers then removed the caiman and turned it over to animal control.

Caimans, which are closely related to crocodiles and alligators, are not native to Colorado, and this one was most likely somebody's pet, according to a Facebook post by Aurora Police.

Sources tell Denver7 the caiman died, but didn't immediately announce what led to the reptile's death.
