Simon Beck is an artist with a unique canvas: snow.

Beck, 61, uses a compass, his background as a cartographer and his footsteps to create massive geometrical patterns in snowfields.

On Tuesday, he created one of his large murals behind the Columbia store at the Outlets at Silverthorne.

"We are in awe of these four murals, each one showing off different techniques Simon uses to create his incredible designs," the city of Silverthorne wrote on a Facebook post.

His art is very weather-dependent and snowfall and wind can stretch the process out. The city said Beck recently completed four murals in three days, and each piece can take anywhere from two to six hours to complete.

For one piece, Beck spent more than 12 hours with volunteers creating a spiral pattern on a frozen reservoir.

He has completed about 330 snow drawings and 120 in sand since he started the art form outside his winter home at a French ski resort in 2004. He says he hopes his drawings bring awareness to the beauty of the environment.
