DENVER – It’s a goal David Shuker has wanted to accomplish for more than 50 years: graduating from high school.

Shuker dropped out of Lincoln High School in the early 1960s in order to enlist in the Army. He was a junior at the time.

When he returned home from serving overseas, Shuker started a family and built a life for himself, but he didn’t quite get over the fact that he missed out on one of life’s biggest milestones.

“I think the big thing I miss most of all was the kids I grew up with, and by golly, I didn’t walk down the aisle with them,” Shuker said in a video on Denver Public Schools’ Facebook page. “I don’t regret joining the service, don’t get me wrong, but I should have waited one more year.”

Shuker will join Lincoln High’s senior class at graduation on Thursday, June 1, where he'll receive an honorary diploma. The only difference is, he’ll be in the class of 1964 instead of 2017.
