THORNTON, Colo. – Amazon is expanding its presence in Colorado with another huge fulfillment center.

The company announced Monday that it plans to build a new facility at the northeast corner of I-25 and 144th Avenue in Thornton that will employ more than 1,500 full-time workers.

The building's footprint will be 855,000 square feet, but with three stories, the building will have a total of 2.4 million square feet inside.

When it’s completed next year, the building will be Amazon’s second fulfillment center in Colorado. The first, currently under construction in Aurora, is nearing completion.

While that facility will handle just about anything a customer orders on Amazon, the Thornton facility will focus on smaller purchases, like books, electronics and toys.

The Thornton fulfillment center will use Amazon Robotics technology to help speed up the order fulfillment process. This will be the company’s first Amazon Robotics facility in Colorado.

Thornton Mayor Heidi Williams said in a prepared statement that the city is glad to welcome Amazon to town.

“The City of Thornton is extremely excited Amazon chose to locate this state-of-the-art facility in Thornton. Amazon’s commitment to the communities where their fulfillment centers are located is impressive,” Williams said. “They will be the largest employer in Thornton and represent the cutting edge of innovation in the e-commerce market.”

Construction on the new facility should begin this month and Amazon expects to open the facility in August 2018.
