A lot of blood but no body: Aurora police ask for help in cold case of missing man

AURORA, Colo. – A bizarre 911 call is the beginning of a case that has continued to puzzle Aurora Police. It’s been more than a year since a caller reported a large amount of blood near a dumpster, in the parking lot of a busy strip mall.

“That’s just kind of odd, the mention of just the blood and nothing else,” said Aurora Police Det. Jamie Krieger said.

Krieger responded to the scene on the morning on Aug. 20, 2018. She said police had very little information in the beginning. Crime scene investigators processed the scene and took photos. They even contacted the coroner’s office to ask how they might be able to determine if the blood indicated whether someone was possibly dead or seriously injured.

“We have no body because at this point there’s relatively little information about what happened,” Krieger said. “We have interviewed a number of people but at this point everything that we have investigated has kind of come to a wall.”

Days after the blood was found, information led police to the Denver Arapahoe Disposal Site off of Gun Club Road in Aurora. Investigators searched an acre of land with help from K9s but it did not lead to any new information.

The CBI lab tested a sample of the blood and DNA tests later showed it belonged to 43-year-old Eric Todd Ewing. According to police, he went missing around the same time the blood was found.

“That was pretty important because now we have a face, we have a face with evidence and that at least let us have a direction in which to lead the investigation,” Krieger said.

She said no one has heard from him since the night of the 911 call and that is highly unusual. Krieger said he kept in touch with family and friends. Many people in the area were used to seeing him because at 6-foot-9, he stood out.

Even though the blood sample matches Ewing’s DNA, the case is not being classified as a homicide.

Anyone with information on the disappearance of Ewing or the large amount of blood found in the parking lot is encouraged to contact Aurora police.
