FAIRPLAY, Colo. – An 8-year-old boy was killed in a head-on crash near Fairplay in Park County on Friday night, officials said.

The crash happened about 6:30 p.m. on U.S. 285 at Red Hill Pass.

A 2004 Toyota Tundra was heading south on the highway when it drifted into northbound traffic and struck a 2017 Hyundai Tuscon head on, according to a news release from the Colorado State Patrol. The Tundra rolled over, and the Tuscon struck a guardrail.

Tristan Benns, an 8-year-old from Bailey, was riding in the Tuscon and died at the scene, officials said.

A 30-year-old woman and 28-year-old man were also in the Tuscon and were taken to a hospital. The man had serious injuries and the woman had minor injuries.

The driver of the Tundra, a 56-year-old man from Alma, was flown to a hospital with serious injuries.

Investigators did not suspect alcohol, drugs or speed to be involved in the crash. Everyone involved in the crash were wearing seatbelts. The crash was still under investigation Saturday.
