DENVER – Friday is National Doughnut Day and what better way to celebrate than by sampling some of the wacky creations at Voodoo Doughnut in Denver?
Voodoo offers the typical glazed doughnuts, fritters and maple bars that other doughnut shops carry, but that’s not what makes it popular. At the original location in Portland, Oregon, people line up down the street to get their hands on Voodoo’s creative, sugar-laden doughnuts.
Here are seven of the most unique flavors that make Voodoo such a destination:
1. Bacon Maple Bar
The bacon maple bar is arguably one of Voodoo’s most well-known and well-loved doughnuts. It’s sweet, salty and delicious. If you’ve never been to Voodoo and don’t know what to order, this is a good place to start.
2. Voodoo Doll
With a name like Voodoo Doughnut, obviously you have to sell one in the shape of a voodoo doll. This doughnut is a typical raised bar type with chocolate frosting, raspberry jelly filling and a pretzel stick stuck in it.
3. Cock-N-Balls
This one is filled with Bavarian cream, obviously.
4. The Loop
If you ate Fruit Loops cereal as a kid, you’ll love the doughnut rendition. It’s a raised yeast doughnut with vanilla frosting, embedded with Fruit Loops.
5. Tex-Ass
They say everything is bigger in Texas, so the Tex-Ass doughnut is a regular glazed doughnut that is the size of six regular-sized doughnuts. You should probably split this with a few friends, but we won’t judge you if you decide to eat it all yourself.
6. Diablos Rex
If you like your pastries with a side of the occult, try the Diablos Rex. It’s a simple chocolate cake doughnut with chocolate frosting, red sprinkles, chocolate chips and a white-frosted pentagram.
7. Dirty Snowball
The Dirty Snowball is a chocolate cake doughnut with pink marshmallow and coconut topping, with a dollop of peanut butter in the middle that looks like you-know-what. Yum!
