EVERGREEN, Colo. -- When dog owners leave their pet's "remnants" behind, it adds up quickly.

During a clean-up day at the Elk Meadows off-leash dog area, volunteers and workers picked up and removed 424 pounds of dog waste.

"The Elk Meadow Dog Off-Leash Area has unusually high amounts of pet waste left on the ground, which contributes elevated levels of E. coli and other pathogens in local soil and stream corridors," Jefferson County Open Space wrote on its website.

That forced officials to close the park Saturday for a clean-up day.

Dog owners who would like a better way to carry their dog's waste, can get a Wag'n'Load pack it out bag at the JeffCo Open Space office.
