WINDSOR, Colo. – Tuesday marks 10 years since a mile-wide EF-3 tornado left behind a 39-mile-long trail of destruction in Weld County, hitting the town of Windsor particularly hard.
One person was killed and the tornado caused millions of dollars in damage.
While the town has rebuilt, many people in the community still remember when the storm hit.
“It looked like a war zone,” one neighbor said, recalling the destruction. “I’ve been to Vietnam and it looked like that.”

“It wiped out 90 percent of this subdivision,” said Windsor Public Works Director Terry Walker, walking through a neighborhood that was hit especially hard. “When I say ‘wiped out,’ it took the roofs off the porches down, the garages were down, the garage doors were down.”
There were 775 homes in the tornado’s path and more than half of them suffered extensive or significant damage. In all, the damage added up to more than $193 million in insurance claims.
