1 dead, 3 injured in Commerce City after driver crosses I-76 median, crashes into oncoming traffic

COMMERCE CITY, Colo. — One person died and three were injured after a driver crashed into oncoming traffic in Commerce City Wednesday evening.

On Wednesday at 8:11 p.m., officers with the Commerce City Police Department responded to a traffic crash on Interstate 76 between Sable Boulevard and U.S. Route 85.

According to the preliminary investigation, the driver of a silver Nissan SUV was driving westbound on I-76 at a high rate of speed. The driver, who was the only person in the car, crossed into the center median and crashed through the metal cables dividing the highway. The driver then struck an oncoming Chevy truck in the eastbound lanes.

The driver of the Nissan died from injuries sustained in the crash.

All three people in the Chevy were transported to the hospital with serious injuries.

The eastbound lanes of I-76 stayed closed while authorities investigated the crash scene.

This is the fourth fatal traffic crash in Commerce City this year.
