Firefighters find mom in labor at their door

Posted

Firefighters typically drive somewhere to help people, but Sunday in Aurora, a woman needing help came to them!

The firefighters at Fire Station No. 7 said they heard a knock on the door at 4 a.m. and found a woman in labor.

"Typically, when someone's banging on the firehouse at four o'clock in the morning you think it's something worse," said engineer Zac Varela. "But a baby being born? That's good news."

Firefighters quickly laid a blanket on the grass, put the mom on the blanket and got ready to deliver a baby.

"Fortunately, our ambulance showed up pretty quickly," Varela said.

The baby was delivered in the ambulance.

"Mom and baby were champs," Varela said.

Varela said in the five years he's been assigned to this fire station, six babies have been born there.

And the mom herself has some experience with fire stations.

"Mom-to-be was actually born in the back of an ambulance in the City of Aurora," Varela said. "Almost 20 years to the day that her baby was born."

We're told the baby was a girl, but we don't know her name yet.
