WHEAT RIDGE, Colo. -- A motorcyclist who was not wearing a helmet was killed in a fatal crash in Wheat Ridge on Wednesday evening, city officials said Thursday.

The deadly crash happened at Wadsworth and 48th Avenue at approximately 7:30 p.m., according to an official with the Wheat Ridge Police Department.

The motorcycle was traveling north on Wadsworth when it struck a pickup truck pulling a double-axle open box trailer that was turning left at West 48th Avenue from the southbound lane, said Sara Paulding, a spokeswoman for the City of Wheat Ridge.

The motorcyclist, Zachary Theriault, 25, died at the scene. There were no injuries to the driver of the car who stayed on the scene, a police department official posted on Facebook

"There are no indications of drugs or alcohol use," Spaulding said.

Witnesses who spoke with investigators said Theriault was speeding and driving recklessly prior to the crash.

Wadsworth was closed for a few hours in all directions from I-70 to 44th Avenue as officers investigated the crash.

The crash is still under investigation.
