WHEAT RIDGE, Colo. -- A man who was critically wounded in a shootout outside an apartment complex late Saturday has died.

The exchange of gunfire happened at the Brookview Gardens on West 37th Avenue between Owens and Parfet Streets near Louise Turner Park, after the victim reportedly broke into one of the apartments to talk to a woman inside.

The woman was in a relationship with the victim in the past but had broken it off several months ago, an official with the Wheat Ridge Police Department said.

After the man broke in, gunshots were exchanged between the two men and when police got to the scene, the man who reportedly broke in was found unresponsive near the entrance to the apartment. The man who shot was not injured.

The victim was rushed to St. Anthony's Hospital with gunshot wounds but was pronounced dead several minutes later, according to Commander Mark Cooney with the Wheat Ridge Police Department.

There have been no arrests and no charges are anticipated, Cooney said. The case is under investigation.
