The fiancée of man killed in a car crash involving a Westminster Police Department vehicle is demanding a thorough investigation of the crash.
Travis Wood II was killed early Thursday morning after his car was hit by a Westminster police cruiser.
According Westminster Police, the officer was heading to an emergency call, driving south on Federal. Police said the two cars collided when Wood, who was heading north, tried to make a westbound turn. A preliminary investigation reveals the officer's lights and siren were on at the time.
"Not only did he die; a part of me died,” said his fiancée, Julie Santistevan. "He was everything to me. And we had so many plans. And [we were] getting married," she said. "I just thought I had more time with him. Not just one year."
"I can't ask him, 'what happened?' I can't ask if, 'did you pull out in front of the car? Did you mean to?' I can't ask, was [sic] his lights and sirens on?' I can't ask him those questions. And since I can't, I just want to know... I want to know the truth."
As an accident team investigates further, Santistevan, now a single-mother of a two-month-old, is trying adjust.
"We have a son that has special needs. He needs his Dad... and now his dad is gone and I can't bring him back," she said.
A candlelight vigil for Wood is scheduled to take place Sunday at 6 p.m. at Westminster Center Park, 801 West 92nd Avenue. A GoFundMe account has been set up to help the single mother and her son travel to Texas, where Wood will be laid to rest.
The officer involved in the crash survived. Westminster Police said their squad cars do not have dash cameras.
