WELD COUNTY, Colo. – Monitors that detect explosive gases will be given out for free to all Weld County residents after a home explosion in Firestone left two people dead in April and forced state officials to order a statewide review of all oil and gas lines a month later.

The Weld County Board of Commissioners will make the monitors available to all Weld County residents at the county’s Planning Department, located at 1555 N. 17th Avenue.

Walk-ins are welcome, but the board recommends you call ahead to schedule a time with the county’s Oil and Gas Liaison “to discuss any specific concerns residents may have related to oil and gas operations,” said Weld County Planning Director Tom Parko.

To make an appointment, you are asked to call Troy Swain at (970) 400-3548.

You’ll need to bring proof that you’re a resident of Weld County, such as a utility bill, driver’s license or property tax statement.

There is a limit to the number of explosive gas monitors you can get: one per household, the board of commissioners said in a statement sent to Denver7.

“At the end of the day, we want residents to feel safe in their homes,” said Commissioner Mike Freeman. “If this program helps with that, than we are happy to provide it.”
