LONGMONT, Colo. (AP) — City officials say they may retire Longmont's outdoor emergency warning sirens that announce approaching tornadoes and look for other ways to notify residents of emergencies.
The Longmont Times-Call reports that city staff made the recommendation Tuesday. The siren system is normally tested at 10 a.m. on the first Monday of each month from April to August. Officials say the system will not be tested in April.
Last year, the siren system went off without reason, marking the second time it had malfunctioned. City staff say because of that incident, the sirens will be shut off until the city council can decide what to do.
Officials are considering a new siren system from a different manufacturer that could cost up to $500,000, or getting rid of it altogether and using new technology.
