LONGMONT, Colo. -- The driver accused of running over an 8-year-old Longmont girl who was riding her bicycle at the time of the crash has turned himself in.

Kyle Couch, 20, turned himself in to the Boulder County Jail Friday morning, according to Longmont Deputy Chief Jeffrey M. Satur. He was released after posting bond.

On Tuesday, investigators working on the case said they believed Couch was under the influence of marijuana at the time of the crash on May 20, adding they planned to arrest him by the end of this week.

After the crash occurred, investigators said Couch remained at the scene and cooperated with them but was later released.

Peyton Knowlton, 8, was hit by a full-size Ford pickup in the area of Alpine Street and East 17th Avenue as she rode her bike with her stepfather. She was returning from an end-of-the-school year celebration with her fellow second graders.

Officers and fire personnel performed CPR on the girl, but were unable to save her. She died at Longmont United Hospital.

Family friends have set up a GoFundMe account to help the bereaved parents.
