BOULDER, Colo. -- Boulder County District Attorney Stan Garnett has cleared a deputy of wrongdoing in the fatal shooting of a man who opened fire on a highway near Longmont.
Garnett said Thursday that Deputy Teri Javes was justified in the Sept. 10 shooting, the Daily Camera reports.
The Boulder County Sheriff's Office said it received multiple calls from drivers about a man, later identified as 37-year-old Adrian Shaffer, acting aggressively toward motorists in the 7500 block of North 107th. The callers told dispatchers the man had a gun tucked into the waist band of his pants.
Investigators said the man opened fire on Javes when she pulled up to the scene. The gunfire shattered the window to the Javes's patrol SUV. The deputy returned fire, hitting Shaffer twice.
Javes’ patrol SUV was hit twice.
Shaffer died a week later from his injuries.
The sheriff's office plans to award Javes with a medal of valor for her actions.
