LITTLETON, Colo. – A Littleton family will celebrate their twin daughters' inspirational story at the 15th annual Great Candy Run at Wash Park on Sunday, Nov. 11.
Sixteen years ago, when Lonnie and Michelle Somers were pregnant, they learned that their twins had a fetal syndrome called Twin-to-Twin Transfusion Syndrome. They were told that there was little that could be done and that they were likely to lose both twins before birth.
Devastated, the Somers did their own research and found a doctor in Florida who had been successful doing in-utero surgery for this syndrome. They flew to Florida, had the surgery and later had healthy twin daughters. Aspen and Ashley Somers are now 15-years-old, have skipped a grade, each maintain a 4.0+ GPA and are aspiring actresses.
The Somers' experience made them want to help other families find hope. They started the nonprofit Fetal Health Foundation, which connects families diagnosed with a fetal condition to top-rated medical specialists and to other families who have experienced a similar condition, raises awareness of fetal health syndromes and funds research to improve outcomes in fetal conditions.
