Sergeant Rob Madden of the Colorado State Patrol said he is happy about the amount of people who try to help others on the road, but there's a danger involved he said drivers should not have to face.
This comes a day after two people were injured in Gilcrest after they got out of their car to help someone they’d seen get hit by a car.
Earlier this month, a woman was hit and killed by a car after she got out of her car to help a man she'd hit.
While Madden cannot comment on these specific cases, he told 7NEWS reporter Brendaliss Gonzalez there are things drivers need to know before getting out of their cars on a busy highway.
“The people driving by,” he said, “they’re paying attention to things that they’re seeing out there, they’re not necessarily paying attention to the people.”
3 MAIN TIPS FOR DRIVERS:
Madden said drivers should:
1. Get off the road
2. If you cannot get off the road, get as far to the right as you can
3. If it is too dangerous, keep going and call 911 for help.
“We want people to know that if they’re out moving around vehicles, there are other cars driving through,” he said.
Madden said more hybrids on the roads can also create problems for people on the road because the engine is so quiet, you can’t hear the car approaching until it is too late.
He said while stopping to help someone in need is good, waiting to make sure it is safe to pull over is even better.
“That ten seconds of making sure it’s safe can save your life,” he said, “It can save other people’s lives.”
