Changing temperatures causing potholes to pop up

and last updated

The latest constant change in weather temperatures is to blame as to why many potholes are popping up on roads.

Potholes typically appear in the spring.

Douglas County officials wanted to tackle the problem head-on and sent crews out to patch areas like Highlands Ranch. Douglas County Public Works supervisor Wesley Trueblood said Highlands Ranch has the most potholes in the county.

On Friday, Public Works filled 40 potholes in Highlands Ranch with $180 worth of cold asphalt mix.

“We have an upcoming storm, so we can try and get as many holes patched as we can,” said Trueblood.

Douglas County spends about $651,000 a year on patching pot holes while Denver spends about $2.8 million to patch them up. Arapahoe and Jefferson counties spend roughly $450,000 on patching potholes.

Crews plan to be on the road often as they head into the spring season. However, patching potholes is something crews work on throughout the year.
