An Evans man who strangled his girlfriend and permanently disfigured her by biting one of her eyelids off has been sentenced to 20 years in prison.
The Greeley Tribune reports 28-year-old Jose Leyva-Estrada was sentenced Monday to 13 years in prison for first-degree assault and a seven-year term for second-degree assault. He will serve the terms consecutively.
Prosecutors say Leyva-Estrada beat his girlfriend at her Evans apartment March 6 after she woke him up from a nap to tell him she was leaving to pick up her kids.
When police arrived at the scene, she had blood all over her face and hair, bruises around her neck, and teeth marks on her right eye, which also was swollen shut.
