GOLDEN, Colo. — A Jefferson County man was sentenced to 20 years in prison for assaulting a deputy at the county jail earlier this year, officials said.

Roger Charles Joseph Freyta, 39, pleaded guilty in July of first-degree assault of a guard by an inmate, his third felony conviction.

The deputy on Jan. 1 had completed an inmate count at the Jefferson County jail in Golden when Freyta assaulted him with a hand-made weapon, hitting the deputy on the face and head, officials said.

Freyta made the weapon from a padlock he stole from deputies, tying the lock to a strip of fabric torn from a sheet or pillowcase.

The deputy suffered serious injuries, including a concussion, contusions and lacerations on his face.
