JEFFERSON COUNTY, Colo. — A 50-year-old inmate was found dead in his cell at the Jefferson County Jail on Friday morning, officials said.

Paul George Abeyta was found unresponsive during a routine check about 5:15 a.m., according to the sheriff's office. Abeyta, who was arrested by Lakewood police on Monday, had reported COVID-19 symptoms and indicated he had been using heroin on a daily basis, officials said.

Abeyta was kept in isolation in the medical unit but did not have a fever during his stay at the jail. He faced more than 10 felony or misdemeanor charges, the sheriff's office said, and was being held on a $100,000 bond.

His cause of death hasn't been determined yet.
