GOLDEN, Colo. – A Colorado mother died Sunday after trying to rescue her son from Clear Creek in Golden, authorities said.

Officials believe mother and son went into the creek in tubes west of 6th Avenue but shortly after entering, the 11-year-old boy’s tube capsized and he was tossed in the water.

The mother reportedly went after him and was briefly able to save him; but they were overcome by the water and kept going downstream. The mother, identified as Amber Raye Presson, 31, of Denver, resurfaced one time and screamed for help before going back under water, said Golden Police Department spokesperson Karlyn Tielly.

Golden Police said they believe at that time, that the woman struck her head on a rock and was likely knocked unconscious.

Her son yelled for help at which point bystanders came to their aid.

Both mother and son were pulled from the water just east of 6th Avenue and CPR was administered by paramedics at the scene, but the mother was pronounced dead a few moments later.

The 11-year-old boy was not physically injured and is now in custody of relatives.
