FORT COLLINS, Colo. (AP) -- The route between Fort Collins and the Big Thompson Canyon town of Glen Haven is clear for the first time in more than two years.

The Coloradoan reports that officials formally reopened Larimer County Road 43 on Thursday after years of work and $50 million went into rebuilding it after the 2013 flood that killed eight people in Colorado.

The county road was mostly scoured away when the floods swept through the area and much of the repair work focused on where it forks off from U.S. Highway 34.

The reopening comes just in time for permanent repair work on U.S. 34 east of Drake to begin in earnest. Blasting will begin in August and a full closure to non-residents will take effect in October.
