'Cop' investigating robbery was impersonator

Posted

Fort Collins Police are investigating a bizarre case of police impersonation involving a robbery.

A woman said she came home Wednesday night, heard noises in her home and found a stranger inside. The woman said she ran, locked herself in a room and the man left.

"Shortly thereafter, another male entered her residence, wearing civilian clothing and identified himself as police officer," Fort Collins Police said. "He then went through the motions of taking a police report and left her residence."

When the woman called police later that night to follow up on the incident, Fort Collins police determined no officer had been dispatched to her home.

The woman worked with an artist to create a sketch of the police impersonator and the robber.

"We encourage anyone who is unsure about an officer’s identity to request documentation (such as a badge number and business card)," police said. "If citizens still have identity concerns during an encounter with an officer, we encourage them to call 911 for confirmation."

If you recognize the robber or the police impersonator in this case, contact Detective Jaclyn Shaklee at 970-416-2771 or Crime Stoppers of Larimer County at 970-221-6868.
