Slain taxi driver remembered as selfless, loving

Posted

People are gathering to remember a Denver taxi driver who was killed over the Labor Day weekend.

Police say a boy killed Darren Bloomquist during a robbery.

Bloomquist, 49, worked for Metro Taxi for 10 years.  He was shot and killed inside his taxi on Sept. 5, after receiving a call to pick up a fare in the Green Valley Ranch neighborhood.

Denver police have arrested a juvenile who is now under investigation for first-degree murder.
They haven't released the suspect's name or age, and are only saying that he is a juvenile.

On Friday, family, friends, and coworkers remembered Bloomquist and the life he lived for others.

"Bloomquist wasn't just a great person. He was a loving husband and a selfless human being that would do anything for anyone. In fact,  Bloomquist was so selfless that he was driving a taxi cab to pay for his physically challenged wife's medical bills, making his untimely demise even more tragic," Metro Taxi spokeswoman Kate McBride said.

The service, being held at Metro Taxi's headquarters at 5909 E. 38th St., runs until 2 p.m.
Denver's mayor attended the service.

Metro has also started a funding campaign for Bloomquist's wife. Contributions can be made at www.gofundme.com/Darren-s-Justice.
