DA: Cop shooter also charged for home invasion

Posted

On crutches and next to his lawyer, the alleged shooter of a Denver police officer appeared in court Wednesday, but not to face charges in the Dec. 8 shooting.

Jason Wood appeared for charges stemming from a home invasion. Police say that on Sept. 30, Wood broke into a home on Perry Street with two others. They allegedly pistol-whipped the victims, and stole five tattoo machines and a purse.

Wood is charged with aggravated robbery, second-degree assault and first-degree burglary. Co-defendant Jennifer Lovato was charged earlier this month for her alleged involvement.

The judge assigned Wood a new defense counsel because of a conflict of interest with the previous attorney.

The Denver District Attorney's Office also said Wednesday that Wood has been formally charged with attempted first-degree murder, first-degree assault and robbery in the shooting of Denver officer Tony Lopez Jr. Investigators say Wood fired on Officer Tony Lopez Jr. during a traffic stop on Federal Boulevard last week. He's accused of fleeing and carjacking a woman near the scene in an attempt to escape.

Police arrested the suspect at 20th and Chestnut streets after a chase.
