DENVER – A Denver man arrested in Los Angeles Thursday after pipe bombs were found in a downtown Denver hotel was charged in U.S. District Court in California Friday.

Adam Hayat, 35, was arrested without incident in California on a charge of possession of pipe bombs not registered with the ATF, several federal officials said Friday.

Hayat is being held without bond and will eventually be transferred to the State of Colorado by the U.S. Marshals Service for further court hearings.

Federal sources told Denver7 Investigates that police discovered the unexploded devices inside a safe in the Sheraton Hotel in downtown Denver, where the suspect was staying.

Sources told Denver7 Investigates that an unpaid bill tipped off investigators. When they went to the hotel room, they found a note written on the mirror in lipstick referencing PTSD. The word “explosives” was written on the closet door mirror, according to a news release from the Justice Department.

After opening the safe, a Denver Police officer found a closed ammunition case. “Also found in the hotel room were several metal pipes and empty rifle shell casings,” the release states.

Investigators then tracked Hayat's cell phone to California, where he was staying at a Holiday Inn on La Cienega, a major north-south boulevard in Los Angeles.

The 35-year-old veteran reportedly sent a letter to the VA about five years ago, complaining he wasn't being listened to, sources close to the investigation told ABC News.

Investigators on Thursday were also trying to determine whether Hayat was on the radar of law enforcement agencies.

Hayat was charged with one count of possession of firearms not registered with the National Firearms and Registration Transfer Record. The penalty on that charge is not more than 10 years in federal prison, and up to a $250,000 fine, an official with the Justice Department said.

It appears Hayat has lived in Denver since at least 2012.

Court records show Hayat was cited for violating a curfew at Civic Center Park in the summer of 2012.

A Colorado Secretary of State document also shows Hayat registered a landscaping firm -- Lard Landscaping  LLC -- using the address of the St. Francis Center, a homeless shelter located at 2323 Curtis Street in Denver, in 2013.
