The family of a Denver Police Department officer who was injured after being shot in an arm and both legs on Tuesday has released a statement a day after the shooting.
We greatly appreciate the outpouring of support from Mayor Hancock, Chief White, Deputy Chief Quinones, Tony Junior’s fellow officers, the Denver Police Foundation and the community. Tony Jr. remains in critical condition with a long road ahead to a full recovery. We appreciate your thoughts and prayers at this difficult time.
The Lopez Family
Tony Lopez, Jr., is a second-generation Denver policeman. His father, Tony Lopez Sr., is a Denver Police Department commander.
Lopez was shot during a traffic stop near W. 37th Avenue and Federal Boulevard. The surgeon who operated on him told Denver7 Investigator John Ferrugia that Lopez is expected to survive, after suffering massive blood loss that almost stopped his heart.
Last year, the Denver Police Department honored Lopez on Facebook as one of the best officers of 2014 after he went out of his way to make sure a 4-year-old girl got "the birthday she deserved after saving her mom's life."
