DENVER -- Under football field lights, the East High School Angels football team took the field for their season opener. Along with them was the East High cheerleading team.

Denver7 has learned an assistant principal at East has taken over the team temporarily as a "sponsor" according to the district.
"The current status of the team is that these young ladies are here to have an amazing time and to move forward with their season," Terita Berry, the team's sponsor said.
"They're excited to get back to a sense of normalcy. All of this national media has been putting the cheerleading squad in a light that they're not used to being in," Denver Public Schools spokesperson Will Jones said.
Jones told Denver7 that the district is still working with the Denver Police Department, who are investigating the videos. The cheer coach has been fired and some school officials were also placed on leave as a result of the incident.
The plan for the team moving forward is to cheer at all regular season football games.
