2 students detained for gun scare at East HS

Posted

The Thursday afternoon lockdown at East High School, prompted by reports of a student with a gun, has been lifted. Police have detained two students for the scare.

The student who was arrested tried to steal money from another student outside the school and used a BB gun that looked like a real gun, according to DPD spokesperson Sonny Jackson.

Dozens of Denver police officers responded to the school on 1600 City Park Esplanade around 2 p.m.

No one was injured and there weren't any reports of shots fired.

According to DPD, a student showed what appeared to be some kind of weapon that was believed to be a gun. Most students had already left the school when the scare happened around 1:40 p.m. because of an early dismissal day.

A Denver7 photojournalist said he saw officers running into East High. A student sent us photos that show SWAT officers inside of the school.

The police department tweeted that officers were taking any necessary precautions to ensure safety. DPD searched the school floor-by-floor and room-by-room.

Authorities did not find a threat.

Police didn't give the ages of the detained students. They say one of them was formally arrested for aggravated robbery.
